Do I Need a Website If I Have a Facebook Page?

by | May 13, 2026 | Business Websites, Facebook, Social Media

If you own a small business and you’re active on Facebook, you might be wondering whether a website is really necessary. You’ve got a place to post updates, share photos, collect reviews, and even message customers directly. That’s a lot. So what does a website actually add?

The short answer is: quite a bit. Here’s why.

You don’t own your Facebook page

This is the big one that most people don’t think about until it’s too late.

Facebook can change its algorithm, restrict your reach, suspend your account, or shut down entirely, and there’s nothing you can do about it. It has happened to businesses before and it will happen again. When it does, everything you’ve built there disappears.

Your website, on the other hand, is yours. You own the domain and you control the content. Nobody can take it away or change the rules.

Google can’t index your Facebook page the way it can your website

When someone searches for “massage therapist in Shelby NC” or “florist near Kings Mountain,” Google is primarily pulling from websites — not Facebook pages. A Facebook page gives Google very limited information to work with. A website gives Google pages of content, location signals, service descriptions, and structured data it can use to match your business to local searches.

If your only online presence is Facebook, you’re essentially invisible to a large portion of people who are actively searching for what you offer.

Facebook pages don’t show up in AI-powered search results

This is becoming more important every day. When someone asks Chat GPT or Google’s AI Overview “who’s a good florist in Cherryville NC?” those tools pull from websites, Google Business Profiles, and local directories, not Facebook pages.

A website with clear, specific content about your services and location gives AI search tools something to cite. A Facebook page generally doesn’t.

A website gives you a home base

Think of your website as your permanent address online and your Facebook page as a bulletin board down the street. The bulletin board is great for getting attention, but when people want to learn more, they need somewhere to go.

A well-built website lets you:

  • Tell your full story in your own words
  • List all your services with prices
  • Show your work with a gallery or portfolio
  • Collect inquiries and leads through a contact form
  • Build credibility with an About page, testimonials, and credentials
  • Show up in Google search results and AI-powered recommendations

Facebook does some of these things, but not all of them, and not as well.

That said — Facebook still matters

This isn’t an argument against Facebook. A business with an active Facebook page and a website is always going to outperform a business with just one or the other.

Facebook is great for staying in front of people who already know you, sharing updates, running local promotions, and building community. A website is great for reaching people who don’t know you yet and want to learn more before making a decision.

The bottom line

If you have a Facebook page but no website, you’re doing better than businesses with nothing at all. But you’re leaving a significant amount of visibility on the table, especially with the way people are searching today.

A simple, well-built website doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. But it does need to be structurally sound.
