Most people don’t think much about how Google works. They simply type what they need and pick a result. But if you run a local business in Shelby or Cleveland County, it’s important to understand what shows up and why. Whether you’re in an alley way or on Main Street, Google can help people find you more often.
A Google results page has three main sections. Each one works differently, and your chances of showing up in each are not the same.
Section 1: Sponsored Results
At the top of the page, you’ll see listings marked with a small “Sponsored” label. These are paid ads called Google Ads, which were once known as Google AdWords.
Businesses pay to show up here. Every time someone clicks their listing, they pay Google a fee. The price depends on the industry and how much competition there is. For some local searches, it’s only a few dollars per click. For others, like legal or insurance services, it can cost much more.
Sponsored results can work if you have experience and enough budget. But for most small businesses in markets like Cleveland and Rutherford County, this isn’t the best place to begin. When you stop paying, your listing all but disappears.
Section 2: The Map Pack
Below the ads, and sometimes right at the top, you’ll find a box with a map and three business listings. This is called the Map Pack, and it’s the best spot on the page for local businesses. Local SEO, website structure, and AI signals are the tools that make it happen.
People use the Map Pack often to find places. It shows your business name, rating, number of reviews, address, hours, and a link to your website. It’s easy to spot, quick to use, and people trust it.
You don’t have to pay to show up in local listings. Google shows businesses in the Map Pack based on how relevant they are, how close they are to the searcher, and how complete and trustworthy their online presence is.
The main things that affect your Map Pack ranking are:
- An accurate and complete Google Business Profile that tells search engines exactly what you do is the most critical step.
- Google reviews—quantity, rating, and frequency all matter, especially in small communities and markets.
- Consistent information across the internet. Your business name, address, and phone number need to match everywhere.
- How close you are to the person searching continues to be a ranking factor because of …near me searches.
- Updates, consistent activity, and responding to reviews are equally important for showing up in the Map Pack.
This approach works consistently for clients and for me. Brian Goes Local reached #1 in the Map Pack for ‘local marketing Shelby NC’ in about five weeks, starting from scratch. No ads, no pay per click, and no social media except Facebook. Only a strong foundation.

Section 3: Organic Results
Below the Map Pack, you’ll see the usual blue links. These are called organic results. Your website can appear here if it’s set up correctly for search engines and AI overviews.
It takes longer to build up your organic ranking than your Map Pack presence, but it keeps growing over time. A well-optimized page can stay at the top for years. Like the Map Pack, you don’t pay for clicks, ads, etc.
Getting into organic results in Gaffney or Shelby requires:
- A website with clear, well-written content
- Proper page titles, headings, and meta descriptions
- Fast load speeds and a mobile-friendly design
- Inbound links from other credible websites
- Schema markup. This is structured data that helps Google understand your content.
Most small local businesses in Cherokee, Rutherford, or Cleveland County aren’t competing with national brands for organic search results. That’s good news because it means there’s less competition, and more opportunities to get more calls and book more services.
What This Means for Your Local Business
Sponsored: You can buy visibility, but you’re only renting it. Unlike a website, businesses don’t own their sponsored listing. Stop paying, stop showing up.
Map Pack: This is the easiest win for a small local business. It’s free, brings real traffic, and gives you an advantage over your competitors.
Organic: This takes longer to build, but creates long-lasting results. Good content and a well-built website can help you keep a spot on the results page for years.
Most small businesses I review are missing the basics that affect Map Pack ranking. Unclaimed Google Business Profiles, inconsistent contact details, no reviews, and incomplete listings can make a local business almost invisible.
